What if they were the remnants of an Ancient Civilisation, on Earth or otherwise, with an impressing life average (like hundreds or thousands of years), trying to guide humans, maybe to manipulate them? " I do beliefe that, as a matter of fact.

Just think what myths circulated about those gods! "They fly all over the world in an arrow", which I translate as "they travel by plane"! And all sorts of things like that!.
